How do our food experts cook and eat? This week, Miss Universe Sri Lanka 2018 Ornella Gunesekere takes our Q&A!

1. It’s the Christmas season – your go-to drink?
-  Non-alcoholic sparkling wine! It’s a very nostalgic drink because when my brother and I were kids we’d pretend like it was alcohol and to this day we still drink it!

2. What does your Christmas table look like?
- I really have to thank my mom for this but my favourite part about the Christmas table is that we have a Candy Table dedicated entirely for sweets and goodies. We’d have all the flavours of Lindt Chocolates and all the varieties of Christmas cookies and we’d deck the table up with little ornaments and lights. I really love it.

3. Since it’s the festive season – what Christmas song is on repeat in the kitchen?
- This year it’s been Feliz Navidad.

4. What’s your ritual when you are cooking?
- Cooking for me is such a social thing. I love to talk while cooking. So far, I’ve enjoyed cooking with nana and she has all these little hacks and tips in the kitchen and tells me stories from her childhood and that for me is very special.

5. What was your favourite childhood meal?
- My nana brought us up when we were kids and she would always give us this MD Strawberry and Melon Jam which remains to be my comfort food even today.

6. If you had Rs. 500, what meal would you make with it?
- Fresh grated coconut sambol, roast paan, butter. Simple.

7. It’s your last day on earth, where are you and what are you eating?
-  Outdoors by a beach in Sri Lanka eating Spaghetti Bolognese – it’s such a comfort food and it will knock me out so I won’t even know when I die!

8. Whip up a meal to impress your fiancé?
- Oh, always Sri Lankan – Dhal curry,  chicken curry,  mallum, ala thel dala and papadam

9. What’s the most exotic food you’ve eaten?
- I was 12, my Japanese aunt gave me a nice piece of meat which was delicious and only later I found out it was Ox tongue.

10. Your favourite odd food pairing?
- Vanilla ice cream and thick, fresh-out-of- the-oil french fries

11. What’s a dish you’d love to relive for the first time?
- A Beef dish I had in Madrid 2 years ago. It was like nothing I’ve ever eaten before, so decadent and melt in your mouth perfect.

12. Sweet vs savoury?
– Sweet - count the memories, not the calories!
